ANOTHER CRITIC
PROGRAMMES OF BBC (Special Correspondent —N.Z.P A.). (Rec. 8.25 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 17. The BBC continues to draw critics of its administration and programmes. The latest to enter the lists is the Rev. Robert Bowyer, of Derby, who is both a cleric and playwright. He says there is “too much blood and thunder” about the BBC’s Saturday night theatre, which he calls “Saturday Nightmare Theatre.” Writing in his parish magazine,,Mr Bowyer says that a great deterioration has taken place in the BBC’s Choice of plays. “It has degenerated so badly that, though 9,000,000 people may still listen, they could hardly look forward with more than a faint hope. One has the impression that England is peopled only by drug addicts, adulterers, murderers and suchlike, who will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Occasionally a healthy person who has cropped up amid debauchery and blood-letting has been as rare as a £1 note in a collection plate—and just as welcome. I don’t mind blood and thunder on Mondays and Wednesdays, but by Saturday, I am ready for a bedtime story.”
