TYPHOON HAMPERS OPERATIONS
WAR IN INDO-CHINA (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) SAIGON, Oct. 17. French Army headquarters reported to-day that a typhoon was hampering the evacuation of civilians from Langson near the China border. Air reconnaissance had disclosed Viet Minh insurgent forces near the China border. In the typhoon the military situation, remained unchanged. The French still hold the stone fortress at Dongdang, about 20 kilometres north-west of Langson. The defenders of the French post near Tourane in central Viet Nam fought off for two hourjj a Viet Minh assault with artillery, inflicting heavy losses. t ... , .. United States light bombers may be flown from Korea to' Indo-Chma within the next 10 days to help French, forces hold the northern border against Viet Minh insurgents, according to French sources in Saigon. They would act as a stop-gap until the arrival of American military aid, promised this week in Washington. The French Air Force in Indo-China has enough pilots to fly the bombers.
