CHICKEN THIEF

RUSE ADOPTED IN ENGLAND HERTFORD (Hertfordshire). Chickens by the thousand are being tattooed in this English County in an effort to heat poultry thieves. Sponsored by the National Farmers’ Union, the scheme makes identification of stolen birds easy. Breeders and owners are allotted a group letter and a series of numbers, which are recorded and afterwards tattooed on the birds web on either wing. No pain or injury is caused to the fowls and their identification mark is permanent. Poultry owners believe the scheme will cut the number of thefts of chickens, especially at Christmas time. —Reuter.
