SOO CANAL
PROTECTION AFFORDED WASHINGTON. New guns have moved into place along the “most important mile in America.’’ The United States and Canadian Governments, spurred by the International crisis, ordered increased antiaircraft defences and a strengthening of security measures around the vital Soo Canal system, connecting Lajce Superior with Lake Huron at the twin town of Sault Sainte Marie in Michigan and Ontario. This military protection of the Soo area—lifeline- of American heavy industry—was reminiscent of the last war. A guard of 12,000 soldiers from infantry, anti-aircraft, military, police, chemical warfare, ordnance and intelligence units then occupied the U.S. Sault Sainte Marie Twin, whose civilian population was only about 15,000. War or peace, the five locks—four American, one Canadian—of the Soo Canal System, carry more in eight months than the combined 12-month Sip traffic of the Panama, Suez and Kiel Canals.—Reuter.
