FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 16, 1900). Valedictory—A pleasant gathering was held in the South Rakaia Library last evening, when some' 50 persons were present. Mr Lambie (chairman v of the Road Board) presided, and explained that the object of the meeting was to bid farewell to Mr James O’Neill, who has been transferred from Rakaia to Nelson. The guest was presented with an illuminated address, and a purse well filled. Messrs Oxley, Irwin, Rountree, Sharp, Midgley,. Liddy, Wright, Hardy, and May spoke as to the general good character of Mr O’Neill. —Football: A match was played in the Domain yesterday afternoon between the Ashburton and Pirates Clubs, and resulted in a win for the latter by 14 points. The scores were: Pirates 17, Ashburton 3. Mr F. Pritchard was referee. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 16, 1925). Anzac Painting—A large copy of a painting of the landing of the Anzacs at Gallipoli has been presented to the Ashburton Technical School by Mr F. Z. D. Ferriman. The Board of Managers yesterday accepted Mr Ferriman’s picture with thanks, and decided to have it framed.—'Function to Reduce Debt: A further effort to reduce the debt on the new parish hall at Tinwald was made last evening, when a euchre party was held. There were about 60 present. The prizes were won by Miss D. Jones and Mr P. Brown.
