BAND CONTEST

CENTENNIAL FIXTURE a ASHBURTON PLANS ADVANCED With nine bands entered, the Centennial Provincial Band Contest, to be held at Ashburton on October 7, promises to be an outstanding success. Arrangements for the fixture, under the control of an energetic committee, with Mr C. H. F. Maynard as chairman and Mr D. Wood as honorary secretary, are well advanced. The following bands have entered for the contest: B Grade: Christchurch Municipal, Crichton Cobbers and Ashburton Silver. C Grade: Ellesmere Brass, Addington Workshops, Rangiora Brass, Lyttelton Marine, Third Armoured Regiment and Temuka'Municipal. Officials appointed included the following: Marshal, Mr L. L. Aitken; timekeepers, Messrs D. Grant and V. Bowman; pace counters, Messrs R. Hughes and I. Eyles; instrument judge, Mr J. Russell. Messrs Maynard (grounds), J. McBrearty (reception) and J. Bruce (advertising and .programme) have been appointed conveners of committees. The judge of music will be the wellknown expert, Mr R. J. Estall, M.8.E., of the Wooiston Brass Band, while application has been made to Headquarters, Southern Military District, for a panel of marching judges. The contest will open with a street march, beginning at 1 p.m., from the East and Tancred Streets corner to the Domain. Portion of this march will be judged on military points, with the winning band receiving a cup valued at £5 ss, this trophy to be won outright. At the Oval, the quickstep and hymn tests -will be held, a change from previous contests when patrons at the afternoon session have seen the quickstep only. Test selections will, be held in the evening in the St. Andrew’s Hall. Members of the Mid-Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes have offered to handle all catering arrangements for bandsmen and visitors. Profits will be donated to the Ashburton Silver Band, the only pecuniary benefit they will receive from the contest. Funds for the expenses are to be raised largely through an art union with a prize of £ls. Tickets for this will cost 2s and each entitles one adult or two children to be . admitted free to the afternoon session. Gold medals for the contest have been donated by Messrs G. Bowman, J. Bruce, C. H. F. Maynard and L. L. Aitken. ....
