ROTARY SECRETARY
ASSEMBLAGE IN TIMARU Timaru is to have a visit next week from Mr Philip Lovejoy, secretary of Rotary International which comprises more than 7100 Rotary Clubs in 63 countries and geographical regions. His visit will coincide with the district assembly of the 40th district, which opens in Timaru on Monday, when 102 members of clubs from south of Manawatu and the whole of the South Island will attend. Mr Lovejoy is expected to take part in the afternoon and evening sessions on Monday. The Assembly will complete its business at noon on Tuesday. From 1930 to 1942, Mr Lovejoy served as First Assistant Secretary of Rotary International, and 1 he has been Secretary since 1942. He was born in Portland, Maine, and graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees of A.B. and A.M. He was a personnel officer in the American* Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Afterwards, he held administrative educational positions in the State of Michigan until 1930, when he joined the staff of Rotary International. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, the American Educational Research Association, the Executives Club of Chicago, and the Chicago Athletic Association. Mr Lovejoy became a member of the Rotary Club of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, in 1924. In 1927 he joined the Rotary Club of Hamtramck, Michigan, and served as its president for two years. He has been a member of tlie Rotary Club of Chicago since 1931. He has been awarded Denmark’s King Christion X Medal of Liberation, and a Doctor of Laws degree from Midwestern University (formerly Hardin College) in Wichita Falls, Texas. He is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Portland, Maine, his birthplace, and of the Rotary Clubs of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, and Hamtramck, Michigan.
