Comity Building Permits Nine building permits, to a total value of £9BOO, were issued by the Ashburton County Council during the period from May 1 to date.

Boys to Return from Glenelg Four Ashburton boys will return from the Glenelg Health Camp next Tuesday, and their places will be taken by four girls, who will leave Ashburton on Friday of next week.

Scarlet Fever Cases in County Two cases of scarlet fever were notified to the Ashburton County Council during the past month, reported the Health Inspector, Mr J. G. Kirk, to the monthly meeting to-day.

Indoor Bowling Match The Ashburton Bowling Club last night played a friendly indoor bowling match with the R.S.A., on the latter’s rinks, the match resulting:—Ashburton Bowling Club 65 games (57 points) and R.S.A. 2 h games (45 points).

Registration of Dogs A decision to take action against all owners' of dogs which remained unregistered after the end of July was made by the Ashburton County Council at this morning’s meeting. To date this year only 1806 dogs have been registered, compared with 3258 during 1949.

Law Not Enforced

Concern at the Government’s failure to enforce the law as it applies to the fixing of seals and levy stamps to containers of honey sold in retail shops was expressed at the annual meeting of the Hawke’s 'Bay branch of the National Beekeepers’ Association. It was considered that this placed the law-abiding seller at a disadvantage.—P.A.

Arbor Day A Gazette notice published last night stated that Arbor Day will be observed this year on August 2, “and in view of the national importance of treeplanting, local bodies throughout Nfew Zealand are requested to organise suitable celebrations on that date.” The notice also' stated that because of local conditions in any district, ,the date could be varied.—P.A.

Loading of Heavy Vehicles “Your letter regarding speeding and loading of heavy vehicles was received and special attention will be paid to these offences,” stated Traffic Officer J. A. Arthur, in his report to ( this morning’s meeting of the Ashburton County Council. He added that, at the present time, there was not a great deal of activity, except in lime and stock carting.

Hinds and Licensing Trust Members of the Ashburton Licensing Trust attended a meeting at Hinds last evening and discussed matters regarding liquor control in the area with a small attendance of local residents. It was eventually, resolved by the meeting to recommend to the Trust that a bottle store and open bar be established at Hinds, and further that, if it should prove feasible, provision be made for the supply of refreshments.

Women Remanded

Two women were charged in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court yesterday with unlawfully killing Joan Phyllis Jack, on April 6, 1950, thereby committing the crime of manslaughter, states a Press Association message. They were Louisa Maria Clark, aged 62, and Margaret Josephine Ryan, aged 34, of Costley Street, Ponsonby. The two accused, who were arrested by Detective-Sergeant W. H. A. Sharp, were remanded till June 29.

M.U.1.0.0.F. Lodge The fortnightly ' meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., last evening attracted a good attendance, over which the N.G., Bro. J. Dickinson, presided. In favour of 12 members, sick pay amounting to £l9 8s 4d for payment. During the evening two candidates were initiated into the Order. At the conclusion of the meeting a friendly euchre tournament was held, at which'members’ wives were guests. Supper was served. Issue of War Medals The present system of distribution of war medals' was endorsed by the annual conference of the Dominion Council of the Returned Services’ Association last night. A resolution to this effect added that the issue of medals should be accompanied by authority to have them engraved locally and that such authority should be sent to those who have already received their medals. The conference recommended that special priority should be given the engraving on medals for next-of-kin. The conference also decided to support the claims to war medals of Royal Naval Reservists who served in New Zealand during the last war.

Traffic Control in County “An extensive check, was carried out during the month on defective lights,” said Traffic Officer J. A. At’thur, reporting to to-day’s meeting of the Ashburton County Council. “Quite a large number,” he added, “were warned for minor defects or defective lights which were not actually in use at the time. Six traffic offences notices were issued for serious defects. Although there were no special functions, traffic was fairly heavy and constant during the month. Traffic offences reported showed a considerable increase to very nearly double those' of last month. Due to football matches in other centres, there was a lot of through traffic and extended hours of patrol were necessary.”

Savages Visit Hospital A number of patients in the Ashburton Hospital were entertained last evening by members of the Ashburton Savage Club. No. 1 Ward was well filled, and those present appeared thoroughly to enjoy every item. The medical superintendent, Mr A. J. Mason, was installed as presiding chief by Great Chief K. Macfarlane. The programme comprised:—Selections by the club orchestra; vocal solos, Mr K. Lochhead, Savages A. Chapman and R. Milligan and Brave L. Smith; pianoaccordion, Savage A. Morriss; saxophone solos, Savage J. Hawkes; violin solos, Savage J. Horan; humorous monologues, Ex-Great Chief A. H. Todd; sketch, Ex-Great Chief R. Downes, Great Chief Macfarlane and Brave Smith; guitar duets, “George and Tony.” The accompanist was Mrs J. Coxshall. Mr Mason expressed thanks to the visitors, who were entertained at supper by the Matron (Miss V. Dearsley) and members of the staff.
