SHIPS COLLIDE
FINDING OF COURT OF INQUIRY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 19. The Court inquiring into the collision betAveon the Taranaki and the Waipiata inside Wellington Heads on May 5 held to-day that the collision was caused by a misunderstanding on the part of both masters about each other’s movements, aggravated by insufficient regard for the regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea. The certificates of both Captain J. J. Macneil, of the Waipiata, and Captain M. H. J. Bennett, of the Taranaki, Avhich Avere held by the Court, were returned to them immediately the decision was announced. Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., who conducted the inquiry, said that the apportioning of blame for the collision would be announced later.
In ordering that the masters’ certificates be returned, Mr McLachlan said that in vieAv of the long careers of both captains at sea the Court felt that they should not Avait any longer for a decision on the return of their tickets.
