POWER CUTS
Operation To-morrow Night fn consequence of the disappointing response to the appeal by the, engineer-secretary to> the Ashburton Power Board (Mr H. G. Kemp) to consumers to save electricity, certain restrictions will operate as from to-morrow night. Mr Kemp made the following state-’ ment to-day: “The response to the appeal to save units has been very disappointing. In the Ashburton area, 6000 units only were saved, Us compared Avitli the previous week, betAveen Tuesday and Friday. On Saturday there Avas a record consumption, showing an increase of 5400 units, with the result that the savings of the earlier part of the week were practically Aviped out. The nett saving for the week Avas only 2660 units and the consumption was 8.6 per cent, above the corresponding Aveelc of last year. “In the Methven area the consumption last week Avas 300 units above that of the preAUous Aveek, and 6.1 per cent, above that of last year. For the Avhole area the consumption was 8 per cent, above that of last year. In the circumstances, the making of compulsory cuts is unavoidable. Beginning to-morrow night,, supply will be cut off in all areas from 1,2.30 to 2.30- a.m. In addition, the use of all advertising signs is prohibited until further notice. Shop window lighting may be used only on Friday night up to 9.30 p.m. Street lighting will be cut off, except in the central area; from midnight.”
