CAPTAIN JOHN CROMMELIN

ACTION AGAIN TAKEN BY U.S. NAVY WASHINGTON, March 15. The United States Secretary of the Navy (Mr Francis Matthews) said tonight that Captain John Crommelin would be put on furlough on half pay from April 1. Captain Crommelin, whose disclosure of Navy Department- correspondence last year into the unification of the armed services, was later “banished” from the Navy Department in Washington to a minor post in San Francisco. Captain Crommelin sought a court-martial, but this was refused. Admiral Forrest Sherman, the Chief of Navpl Operations, on February 22 issued a direct order to Captain Crommelin to refrain from any further public statements criticising defence officials and unification policies. Captain Crommelin, who continued to make public pronouncements, said in San Francisco to-night that he would not abandon his criticism.
