Sir James Shelley, until, recently Director of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts London, March 15. • At this morning’s meeting of the Ashburton County Council the chairman, Mr M. D. McDowell, moved a : vote of sympathy with Cr. S. P. Taylor, who is confined to hospital. It was resolved that a letter wishing him a speedy recovery be sent. Mr G. Nevill has been appointed a stipendiary magistrate to exercise criminal and civil jurisdiction in the Chatham Islands, states last evening’s Gazette. —P.A. Mr E. H. Perry, of Christchurch, was elected District Governor for the ensuing year at the annual conference of the Fortieth District Rotary Clubs in Wellington yesterday. The Fortieth District incorporates New Zealand south of Pahiatua. —P.A.
