LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the "Guardian,” Mar. 17, 1900). Borough Council Election —The polling for the election of a Borough Councillor to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr J. H. Maynard took place yesterday. Shortly after 6 o’clock the Returning Officer, Mr H. H. Foolts, announced the results as follows:—Mr H. Willis 14S votes, Mr G. Andrews 119 votes—Handsome Dahlias: Mr T. Pitt has on exhibition at Messrs Craighead and Berryman’s to-day, two very fine stands of cactus dahlias. The blooms form quite an attraction to passers-by.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 17,, 1925). “Aristocratic Swagger”—The fact of swaggers being out of work and dependent upon peoples’ generosity for their meals does not preyent some of them feeling they compose some of the “aristocracy” of the land. One of the fraternity, carrying a well-black-ened billy, called at a homestead in the Lauriston district this morning and asked for a piece of soap. Tlffi farmer’s wife handed him a piece of household soap, which he gave back to her saying, “This won’t do. I want a piece of toilet soap to wash with, please.”—Band Passes Through: The Newcastle Band, which has just returned from Great Britain after a very successful tour, passed through Ashburton this morning by the southbound express, on their way to Dunedin. The Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) welcomed the band and congratulated them, through the conductor (Mr A. H. Bailie), on their win in the British contest.
