ANOTHER DEFEAT IN ASSEMBLY (Rec. 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4. The French Government to-night suffered defeat by 283 votes to 15G in the National Assembly but the Prime Minister (M. Bidauk) decided not to make the issue a vote of confidence, states the United Press correspondent sit Paris. It is the Government’s first defeat since the Assembly outvoted it four times in one day during the debate m the 1950 budget two. weeks ago. The defeat to-night came during a clause-by-clause vote on the Government’s Bill to restore free collective wage bargaining. The Government liad included a clause to make arbitration in labour disputes compulsory. It roused sharp opposition from both the labour and employers’ organisations M. Bidault may call for a vote of confidence on the Bill as a whole after the clause-by-clause debate is finished.
