BRITISH DESERTERS IN EIRE
IMMUNITY FROM ARREST
LONDON, January 4
Investigating officers of the Army, Navy, Air- Force and police 'services have completed a return of 10,500 deserters who cannot be court - martialled, says the “Daily Herald.” They are men of the three services who fled to Eire when absent without leave, and stayed there. The addresses of many of them are known, but they are safe from arrest and punishment while they remain in Eire. In addition, at least another 1000 deserters, mostly from the Army, are living in Italy, France and Belgium. The number remaining in Britain and gradually being traced is about SOOO, including a few servicewomen.
