Week-end Flying Dual instruction and solo flying Avere again the activities over the week-end of the Ashburton branch of the Canterbury Aero Club. A Miles Magistenand a Tiger Moth were the machines in use. Mothers’ Union St. Stephen’s branch of the Mother’s Union held a successful end-of-year social afternoon recently, to which members of other Avomen’s organisations of the parish were invited. There Was a very good attendance. A short service in the church Avas conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. J, Evans, and the enrolling member, Mrs Evans, presided in the Parish Hall. Musical items arranged by Mrs Easterbrook were given by Mrs McKeague (piano solo), Mrs Weir and Miss Major (songs). A “Church Quiz,” done in groups, caused amusement and interest, and afternoon tea was served by the Mothers’ Union . Committee. A happy, friendly gathering made a fitting end to a good year’s work.

Tasman Air Excursions

An excursion fare Avill be charged by Tasman Empire Airways between January 23 and February 26, says a Press Association message. From Auckland to Sydney Avill cost £35 return, Avhich is a reduction of £ls 8s on the normal fare. The excursion fare applies only to journeys originating in NeAv Zealand. The idea is to encourage east-to-west bookings for the period when extra flights will be made from Australia for the Empire Games. Tasman Ainvays Avill be the first airline operating from Neiv Zealand to make use of the recent International Air Transport Association’s resolutions permitting loiv-rate excursion fares for special events. —P.A.

Bond on Amateurs “So far as the council is .concerned, the question of an amateur bond on Empire Games competitors is not finished Avith,” said the chairman of the council of the New Zealand Boxing Association (Mr J. Simpson) on Saturday, states a Press Association message. Mr Simpson Avas referring to a decision by the Neiv Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association on Wednesday to adhere to the practice of placing a tAvo-year amateur bond on NeAv Zealand competitors at the Empire or Olympic Games. The question has caused considerable controversy in boxing circles and Avas discussed by the Boxing Council at a meeting on Friday night. “The council will meet at Palmerston North during the Empire Games trials next week-end and will then decide Avhat course of action will be taken,” added Mr Simpson.— P.A.
