BILLION-DOLLAR INDUSTRY
UNITED STATES UNDERWORLD (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 2. Mr Virgil Peterson, director of the Chicago Crime Commission, told the Mayor’s Conference at Cleveland, Ohio, that the United States underworld) is a billion dollar industry, and that there Was a ivorking alliance between the underworlds of the various cities.
Mr Peterson said the underworld tried to control local government in the cities where it was “tolerated,” and the insidious influence of criminal elements threatened democratic institutions.
