MR EDEN ISSUES WARNING

' Risk of Growing Misunderstanding ONLY MOSCOW CAN BENEFIT (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright). (Rec. 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. A warning against risk of growing misunderstanding between Britain and the United States was given tc-day by Mr Anthony Eden. Speaking at Anglesey, in Wales, he also condemned the British Government’s economic and financial policy which, he said, was “once again bringing the nation to the edge of disaster.” Mr Edsn said that if the gap between sterling and dollar economies continued to widen, and if bickering between friendly nations took the place of understanding and effort, “no one would gain except Mctscow.” Mr Eden continued: “Relations between the British Commonwealth and the United States are something bigger than any political party in either country. They are the future of the world. No issue in present or past history is of greater moment than this. If the United States and the British Commonwealth and Empire fall apart, there is no world, problem that can he solved. Whatever is achieved in Washington cannot by itself eolve our problems, but we can do this by the united efforts of our Commonwealth family.”

Mr Eden urged the,, British Government to disabuse its muid .of the idea that “any responsible American” wished to try to dictate to the British Government and the British people how we should run our country. “The truth is that our American friends have given us and Europe meet generous help without making the least attempt to interfere in any way in our own political controversies.” Mr Eden said the Socialists had failed to meet the challenge of the times. The Government had refused to amend its economic and financial policy.
