Hedge Fire in Tancred Street Starting from some cause unknown, fire destroyed a small section of the hedge in front of Mr I). Gibson’s home, 15S Tancred Street, on Saturday evening. The outbreak was quickly dealt with by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Timaru Competitions Third place in the recitation, own selection, under 8 years, at the opening of the Timaru competitions festival on Saturday, was secured by Ronald Hellewell, of Ashburton. He was .awarded OS points against the winner’s 71.
Flying on Saturday Strong winds interfered with flying activities at Ashburton during the week-end. Only pne machine, a Tiger Moth, came down on Saturday from Christchurch, and this was engaged in instructional working during the day. Yesterday, however, was a blank day owing to the wind.
Footballer in Hospital
Injured while playing football on Saturday, John Bentley Amos, aged 14, of Cameron Street, was admitted to Ashburton Public Hospital. A fractured arm is the suspected trouble, but the exact extent will not be known until an X-ray examination to-day.
Ashburton Harriers’ Race Ashburton harrier enthusiasts held a race over a course of 42; miles on Saturday, and this resulted as follows: Fast pack—R. Clyne 1, 2, N. Lochhead 3; slow pack—J. Glassey 1, E. Ng 2.
Athletes Prefer Air Travel There are indications in Britain many supporters and contestants will travel to New Zealand by air for the Empire Games next February. Overseas many athletic teams have pre ferred to travel by air as it enables them to reach their scene of action without fatigue. The French Rugby football team for South America has chosen to fly British, and players and officials are making up two parties to travel from Paris to London and on to South America by British South American Airways.
Made His Own Cheeses Lord Baldwin, about whose doings m the Leeward Islands so much was heard a few months ago, has had an adventurous career. He went straight from Eton into the 1914-18 war, and m 1921 suffered the chains of a Bolshevik prison. A Socialist himself, be was on the best of terms with his Conservative father Earl Baldwin. He abolished chaining -in the prisons of his colony, and established therein a onemari industry: he made his own cfieese at Government House.
Government Employment By far the largest number of persons employed by the Government arein the three groups, railways, post and telegraph and building and con struction, the numbers of employees in these three being 20,583, 16,371 and 14,699 respectively. The smallest-staff-ed’ department listed in the survey of employment recently issued is that of Scientific and Industrial Research, with 956 employees.
