ACROSS ATLANTIC IN YACHT
BROTHERS LAND AT DARTMOUTH LONDON, August 18. Cheered by thousands of people, the brothers Stanley and Colin Smith stepped ashore at Dartmouth from the 20-foot yacht Novo Espero at the end of a 3000-mile 43-day voyage across the Atlantic. The Mayor of Dartmouth, 14 councillors and the Smiths’ parents were on the quayside to welcome the yachtsmen, who handed the Mayor a message of greeting from the Mayor or Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, from where the Nova Espero sailed.
TREMENDOUS WELCOME FAMILY REUNION IN CHANNEL (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. IS. Thousands lined the Devon shoreline to-day to give a tremendous welcome to the Canadian brothers, Stanley and Colin Smith, who crossed the Atlantic from Dartmouth (Nova Scotia) in their self-built 24-foot cutter Nova Espero. The brothers told of the six weeks 3000-mile trip in cramped conditions. Their cabin measured only six feet by four. At times they had to bail frantically to keep their craft afloat. Once they had to lie in their cabin for 18 hours with a canvas cover lashed across the top as heavy seas swept their deck. In the Channel last night there was a dramatic family reunion when the mother, father and sister of the two brothers came alongside the tiny Nova Espero in a launch. The Nova Espero is believed to be the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic.
