NOTED CHILDREN'S ARTIST

MRS M. E. LAING IN NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) . WELLINGTON, April 17. Better known as Mollie Bailie, Mrs M. E. Laing, a rioted English children’s artfet, arrived in the Mataroa to work for a short time for a New Zealand firm publishing children’s books.

The delightful illustrations by Mollie Bailie are well known to children and parents. She has published one book of her own and has illustrated others. Her work has included the designing of decorations of children’s nurseries and playrooms. “I am most emphatic that ■ anyone who draws for children must do it thoroughly,” said Mrs Laing., “You must give a child a lot to. look at, and a lot to find out for himself. If there is colour, there should be plenty of it.” . .

She had spent her life, studying children, Mrs Laing said. She was convinced that children’s taste in books aind drawings did not change from generation to generation. People who wrote or drew for them _ must learn to know the mind of children. Mrs Laing left yesterday for Auckland. She expects to be in New Zealand two or three months,
