With an attendance estimated to be almost 3000, the fixture was one of the most successful ever held in the history of the Hinds gymkhana. Gate takings amounted to over £240, compared with last year’s figure of £l5O. Tlie morning was dull and cool, but later in the day conditions were mild and sunny. A feature of the morning’s programme was the light harness events held on the six-furlong clay track ho* longing to Miss J. Cuff. Hamilton, and trained by W. A. Thomas, at Washdyke. The gmykhana was officially opened by Mr A. Donaldson (patron of tne Hinds Gymkhana Committee) who congratulated the committee on the very successful and enjoyable function, and remarked oil the growing popularity of the gymkhanas. The- Mayor of Ashburton (Mr E. C. Bathurst), and Mr J. Davidson (of the executive committee), also made brief speeches. The many -novelty events, provided constant amusement for the spectators, children and adults alike, enjoying the pig catching and fowl-catching competitions.
