POLICE CHIEF KILLED

MURDER IN KENTUCKY " NEW YORK, April 17. The police chief of Harlan County. Mr Ambrose Metcalfe, Avas murdered to-night in the main street of Shields (Kentucky) five miles from the .' township of Evarts, which has had six police chiefs in the last eight months. Mr Metcalfe Avas shot in front of a V restaurant, the manager of which Avas arrested and charged with murder. The arrested man Avas recently acquitted on a charge of the illegal possession of Avhisky in Harlan County, 1 which is a div area.

Bootlegging lay behind the gunplay in Evarts, Avhere since August, one police chief was murdered, one AA r as himself arrested and-charged Avith murder, and three others resigned after a few weeks in office.
