CLOSEST FINISH YET MELBOURNE, April 18. Jack Gann, of Broken Hill, to-day \ won the rich Staweli Gift in the closest finish in the history of the race. Only 21 inches separated the winner and the last of the five fiinalists.

Australan. sprint champion, John Stoney, of St. Kilda, in- finishing third, 10 inches behind Cann, ran nine yards, 35 inches inside even time—only one inch short of Jack Donaldson’s world record, made at Sydney in 1911.
