SMALLPOX A BAD DISEASE

COMMENT BY HEALTH OFFICER / (Rec. 11.30) MELBOURNE, This Day. Australians were “wide open to smallpox,” said the senior health officer of the Victorian Health Commission, Dr. R. E. Harris. He added ihat the recent deaths in England caused by smallpox emphasised the seriousness of the disease and the need of all Australians to be vaccinated. Because there had never been a bad epidemic here, few Australians regarded smallpox seriously or knew what a horrible disease it was. It was no good being vaccinated after contracting infection.
