LAURISTON NOTES

ANNUAL MEETING OF FEDERATED FARMERS

The annual meeting of the Lauriston branch of Federated Farmers was well attended, the president, Mr T. V. Wilkinson, being in the chair. Mi\ G. McRobb was welcomed as a new member. Section reports were presented as follows: —Meat and wool section, Mr W, McKenzie; agriculture section, Mr R. Penney; executive, Mr T. Y. Wilkinson.

Interesting discussions took place on “The urgent need for rural housing,” “The League for Free Trade with Britain,” and “The premium on light weight lambs.” In connection with the latter subject, the meeting unanimously decided on the top price being paid for lambs up to 421bs, if more meat was really required for Britain. Mr Wilkinson presented the annual report. This document gave a full and most interesting account of the year’s activities of the branch, and also touched on many of the highlights of the farming year. Mr R. Penney presented the balance sheet,. which revealed a email credit balance. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted:—President, Mr R. F. Letham: vice-presidents: Messrs G. Scarth and W. McKenzie; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Penney; auditor, Mr J. Crozier; executive delegates, Messrs R. F. Letham, T. V. Wilkinson and G. Scarth; agriculture section, Messrs R. Penney, J. Crozier and R. B. Knight; meat and wool section, Messrs R. F. Letham, G. Scarth and W. McKenzie. Women’s Institute There was a good attendance of members at the April meeting of the Lauriston branch of the Women’s Institute. Presiding was Mrs J. R. Mounsey (president). The aspirations were read by Mrs Y. Boag, and the motto, “Attend frequently, work together, pay promptly, and be good company” was read by Mrs Mounsey. The “roll call” was “My of spending a winter evening.” Mrs G. Mcßobb was welcomed as a new member. Mesdames G. Scarth and J. G. Marshall were appointed the delegates to represent the branch at the annual meeting of the Federation of Institutes to be held at Ashburton in May.

Competitions held during the afternoon resulted*: —Mixed flowers, Mrs C. Hilgendorf 1, Mrs.J, G. Marshall 2, Mrs P. A. Goodwin 3; bloom, Miss J. Hayward 1, Mrs J. A. Maelde 2, Mesdames A. Goodwin and J. Mackie (equal) 3; preserved fruit, Mrs Reesby 1 and 2, Mrs Mounsey 3. The hostesses were Mesdames A. Goodwin and C. Hilgendorf.
