Record Black Marlin A Black Marlin weighing G2slbs was landed at Bay of 'lslands, North Auckland recently by a former Ashburton resident, Mrs K. Johnston. This breaks last year’s record of 5001bs and entitles Mrs Johnston to the silver cup. Good Savings Effected Steam trap alterations and overhauling of the steam valves have resulted in, a saving, over nine months, of 100 tons of coal -and 2,000,000 gallons of water, it was reported to today’s meeting of the Ashburton Hospital Board. Houses for Hospital Staff “That the board aim at providing houses for senior medical and administrative officers where they are required to live at the hospital” was the text of a motion, carried by the Ashburton Hospital Board to-day, after discussion in. committee. Dundee Parcel Fund Donation Following Saturday’s flower show held by the Ashburton Club and M.S.A., most of the flowers entered were sold and a sum of £2 12s 2d realised. This amount had been donated to the Ashburton Returned Services’ Association Dundee parcel fund. Liquor Near Dance Hall For being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a hall where a. dance was in progress, William Gordon. Neale and Michael Martin were each fined £3 with costs 10s by Mr E. A. Lee S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Ashburton to-day. Investments Cut By Half .Investors in national savings accounts at the Ashburton Post Office were much less active last week, the amount paid in being less .than half that for the previous week. The total of £363 for the seven-day period was a decrease of £368 on the previous figure. Ashburton Hospital Patients Patients admitted to the Ashburton Hospital during las*-, month numbered 107, while 92 remained from earlier admissions. Discharges totalled 107 and eight died, leaving 84 in the hospital at the end of the month. Outpatient attendances totalled 652, while 37 were admitted to the maternity ward. Pests About Hospital “Twelve pigeons were destroyed, and a further number took the hint and left,” reported the engineer, to to-day’s meeting of the Ashburton Hospital Board. “Seagulls are being fed by patients and staff, are contaminating roofs and buildings, and are as much a nuisance as the pigeons were —feeding of the birds should be discouraged,” be added. It was stated that members were sympathetic toward the request and it was suggested that a suitable site should be selected. This suggestion was referred to the building committee. Need of the World “If ever there was need for tact and tolerance, there is now,” declared Mrs A. N. Newlands, New Zealand delegate to the UNO conference at Paris, in a public address at Ashburton on Saturday evening. She .had learned that much on her trip, and hoped to see it more fully applied, with friendliness among towns and countries. Mrs Newlands expressed thanks to the people of Ashburton for giving her the opportunity for service in higher spheres of public life.
Swimmer Resigns Position Miss Betty Casey, the New Zealand freestyle swimming champion, has re-, signed her teaching position at a Wellington suburban school in order to concentrate on swimming She had been faced with the alternatives of not defending her titles or resigning her appointment as a teacher, she said at New Plymouth on Saturday. The national championships came at an awkward time of the year for a teacher, and she had usually experienced difficulty in getting the necessary leave to attend. With the Empire Games in view next year, she believed the course she had taken was the only possible one in the circumstances. —(P.A.).
