OBITUARY

MRS ARTHUR BUCHLER By the death yesterday, of Mrs Sarah Jane Buchler, widow of Mr Arthur Buchler, the district generally, and the Church of Christ particularly, loses one of the most valued Christian workers. 1 Mrs Buchler was in her 80th year. Formerly Miss Sarah Brown, she was the first assistant teacher appointed to 'Mount Somers School, this being in 1889. Mr Buchler was then in his fourth year in charge of the school and, not long after Miss Brown came there, they were married. The same vear Mr Buchler was transferred to Wanganui. There was''one son and Mr Buchler had two sons by a previous marriage. After the death of Mr Buchler and the loss of her son, Captain _F. L. Buchler, in World War I, Mrs Buchler resumed teaching, and, for some time, was at Dromore School. She then retired and lived at Ashburton subsequently. Formerly a member of the Presbyterian Church, Mrs Buchler joined the Church of Christ 17 years ago and became one of the best known workers. She was secretary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the church for about F2 years, also formerly secretary of the Red Cross and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. It was only failing health that compelled her to give up these public services. ,
