SMASH-AND-GRAB RAID

POLICE MAKE ARREST (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 9. _ A man was arrested early this morning after a smash and grab raid on Tredrea’s jewellers, 241 Manchester 'Street. Sergeant A. Scally and Constable P. B. Maxwell heard the sound of breaking glass at 3.45 o’clock and went to investigate. They saw a man jump on a bicycle and make off. Sergeant Scally gave chase on his bicycle and Constable Maxwell took a short cut on foot. When be saw' the man coming down Oxford Terrace with Sergeant Scally in'hot .pursuit, Constable Maxwell stepped out on to the road. The man tried to swerve but fell off his bicycle and hit his head on the road. He" was knocked unconscious. A considerable quantity of jewellery was found in his possession. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital for treatment, and later locked tip. He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court to-morrow morning.
