CONSCRIPTION IN PEACE-TIME
Tramway Executive’s Decision “NOT BINDING ON UNION” (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Deo. IS. Exception to the action of the national executive of the New Zealand Tramway Employees’ Union in issuing an “instruction” to oppose peace-time military conscription was taken to-day by Mr G. N. Amos, a member of the national council, and president of the Wellington branch. ; Mr Amos said the union executive had attempted to dictate, to the members of the union as a whole. It had no right to instruct anybody on the issue u'ntil it received the sanction of the union council. The Wellington branch had recently decided that the trade union movement should wait until the return oP the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) before considering th<4 conscription question; “The decision may represent the private opinions of the members of the union executive, but it is not binding on the union until the national council chooses to make it binding if it chooses to do so," Mr Amos said. “The true position is that the national council has not decided the question,”
