RECENT CHALLENGE RESULTS A number of challenge matches for positions on the Ashburton ladders have been played recently and several changes have resulted. The list tvill be suspended from December 20 to January 5, but during that period

challenge games may be played if both players are agreeable. Results of such matches must be notified to the secretary (Mr N. Gosnell). Players who, through holidays or other circumstances, outside' the closed period, will be unable to' play matches within the seven days stipulated by the rules, must advise the secretary of this fact. Through the withdrawal of the Rev. J G. Mathews, .1. Vessey has now been given 16th place on the men’s list. Mrs F. W. Allan has withdrawn from the women’s ladder, and challenges are invited for the 16th place. Recent challenges (challenger given first and the position of the defender shown in parentheses) resulted: Men—A. Stanley lost to P. Jackson (5) 6-1, 4-6, 1-6; .N. Gosnell lost to P. Murray (2) 6-2, 4-6, 3-6; M. Thompson lost to B. Boothroyd (15) 4-6, 3-6; ,T: F. Byrne beat Geo. King (10) 7-5, 6-3. Women—Miss G. Pauli beat Miss N. Clarke (7) 6-5, 6-2, Miss M. Watson beat Miss T. Cullen (13) 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Miss Wall (11) 6-3, 2-6, 6-1; Miss P. Cullen lost to Miss I. McLennan (6) 6-2, 3-6, 4-6; Miss B. Vincent beat Miss N. Clarke (8) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
