LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 9, 1898). The Road Race Cup—The handsome cup won by Mr C. Willis in the tenmile road race of, the Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club, run off on Thursday week, is now on exhibition in the windOAv of Messrs Shearman Bros. It is a fine piece of silversmith Avork, beautifully engraved and on one of the shields is the folloAving inscription: “A.A.C. and A.C. ten-mils road race, Avon by Chas. Willis, scr. Time —26min. 51sec. 24th Oct., 1898.” TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 9, 1923). County Cricket— County cricket this season is becoming interesting as far as individual scores are concerned. B. McSherry has been the first this season to score the century, though others may have reached that figure last Saturday, had not their first-wic-ket partnership been dissolved by the innings being declared closed. This first-Aviclcet partnership of J. B. Nicoll (92) and A. M. Keeley (71), total 163, against Methven, is in itself something of a record for some years.
