FACTORY FIRE IN SYDNEY

BUILDING VALUED AT £500,000 DESTROYED SYDNEY, Dee. 7. A factory covering two and a half acres in the Sydney suburb ,of Fivedock, valued at £500,000 exclusive of its contents, was reduced to a smouldering ruin this afternoon by one of the most spectacular fires in the history of Sydney. The factory was owned by Richard Hughes, Proprietary, Ltd., manufacturer of tin containers, paint and duco. As drums of inflammable liquid exploded, the flames roared 200 feet into the air and drums and timber were hurled 200 yards. Employees say that the fire started when oil from* a burst pipe in the printing room was ignited by a burner. Several hundred employees raced for their lives as tins of lacquer,, thin--ners, and spirits exploded. The' firemen gave up hope of saving the building, but managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings.
