KOREAN REPUBLIC
UNO PROTECTION SOUGHT (Rec. 10.20 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 7. United Nations’ protection for the Republic of Korea from “threats of violence and terrorism” from Commu-nist-controlled North Korea "was asked by Mr John Poster Dulles, actingchairman* of the American delegation to the United Nations. He told- the Political Committee that United Nations members should *‘demonstrate solidarity with the newlyformed but already threatened Government of the Republic of Korea.” Mr Dulles spoke first in. the debate on the Korean issue. Russian delegates have already served indirect notice that they will do everything possible to bar Assembly action on Korea in the five days left for delegates. Mr Dulles said that the present regime, born in obscurity and in defiance of the United Nations, had been recognised by three member States—the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Poland—and was, it seemed, supported morally and materially by forces in North Korea of the Soviet Union.
Mr Dulles appealed for backing for the Korean Republic and the complete withdrawal of the occupation forces, leaving Koreans “truly masters of ,their own homes and not ruled or terrorised by elements that take orders from without.”
