FINED MAXIMUM FOR BOOKMAKING
TOOK £1245 IN BETS IN ONE DAY (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 6. The maximum fine of £SOO was imposed on Ernest William Graham who pleaded guilty to a bookmaking charge in the Police Court to-day. The police said that when they visited his premises on November 27 £1245 bad been taken in bets for the day and detectives took £3O in bets in ten minutes. MAN AND WOMAN % FINED (P.A.) NELSON, Dec. o. Pleading guilty to a charge of keeping a common gaming house, Laurence Bann d’Eganneh, single, manufacturing confectioner, was fined £4O in the Magistrate’s Court. The police said that up to the time of their visit be had taken bets amounting to £Bl. He had started » taking bets on horse racing in October. Elsie Snowden, a widow, also plead* ed guilty to a similar charge. The police said that they found betting material in Mrs Snowden’s home. Up'Ao 11.30 on Saturday morning she bad taken bets totalling £47. Defendant was fined £3O.
