TRAFFIC LAWS

SOME ASPECTS CHANGED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 4. Changes in certain aspects of the traffic laws were contained in the new Transport Law Amendment Act, said the Minister of Transport (the Hon. F. Hackett) in Auckland to-day. Changes dealing with road traffic were already effective. Mr Hackett said that as soon as possible he would make a statement explaining the provisions of the Act, which dealt with transport licensing. “All motor scooters, motorised bicycles, and other small motor-driven vehicles, with the exception of invalid chain?,' are now defined as motor vehicles,” said Mr Hackett. “This means that they must be registered, carry plates, and have a warrant of fitness. Drivers and riders must be licensed and over 15 years of ago. Previously the law applied' only to vehicles weighing more than one hundredweight. The time has now arrived, however, when it is desirable to exercise firmer control over these ‘midget’ vehicles, many of which are capable of quite high speeds. “All the new provisions in the Bill are the result of careful investigation by the Road Safety Council,” said Mr Hackett. “It is hoped Within a short time that further amendments will be made to the traffic reguations, as a result of other recommendations of the council,”
