Red Cross Street Appeal , , > Approximate final returns for tlie Red Cross street appeal at Ashburton indicate that close to £235 was collected. Most of this was by way of donations, but the stalls and competitions did very good business. H.S.A. Win at Cricket A cricket match played at Geraldine yesterday resulted in a win for the Homeservicemen’s Association eleven by 87 runs on the first innings. Geraldine scored 66 in their first innings, and H.S.A. replied with 153.
Allenton Working Bee Allenton residents, who are reconditioning the old fire station with the assistance of a subsidy from the Borough Council, held their first working bee: on Saturday, and much of the preliminary work was carried out by a large attendance of enthuiasts.
Motor-Cyclists’ Trip A large number of members of the Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club staged a social trip to tlie irrigation intake at Klondyke at the week-end. After luncli, members inspected the control gates, and then returned home via Mount Somers, Springburn and Metliven.
Geraldine Marching Contest Several Ashburton teams participated in a marching contest at Geraldine on Saturday. The Farmers’ Coop. team and Star, also of Ashburton, each with 136 points, finished 11th equal among the 23 teams which took part. Kia Ora (130) was 17th and Ashburton Hospital Laundry (117) was 20th.
High School Boys’ Gesture Topdressing of the tennis courts will he carried out to-morrow by a working bee organised among the boys, the: headmaster of the Ashburton High School (Mr E. A. Cockroft) advised the Board of Governors to-day. The board agreed to meet any expense involved, and expressed gratification at the boys’ action.
Yacht Heads for N.Z. Tlie 70-foot yacht Lmatra, with the owner. Captain Nelson, a retired Royal Navy officer, and a crew of six paving passengers, left England tor Auckland on August 18, according to private advice received to-day. captain Nelson is a New Zealander He will probably call at a southern Rhodesian port for Ins _ wife and daughter, who are visiting theie. Review of Mail Service Because the Ashburton Postmaster (Mr A. F. Wells) has advised that the position is under review, the public meeting of country residents inteiested in the question of rural mail services called for December 17, has been cancelled. Now that the service had come under review, no good purpose would be served by holding a public meeting, ap organiser pointed out to-day. High School’s Roll “The school closes with a roll number which is eight below that of, last year, at the same time,” stated the Ashburton High School headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroft) in his monthly report to the final meeting for the year to-day of the school Board of Governors. During the last month, several pupils had accepted positions, having waited until the examinations were completed, explained Mr Cockroft. Civil Actions by Default Judgment for plaintiff by default was given by Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Ashburton,? in the following civil actions: MidCanterbury Transport v. A. Black, £3 15s, costs £1 5s Gd; L. R. T. Kerr v. H. E. Shepherd, £1 13s 6d and costs 10s. On a judgment summons application, L. Cliff was ordered to pay Bros. (Wellington) the sum of £7 8s 4d forthwith, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
Ashburton Hospital Praised Praise for the Ashburton Hospital was expressed by the Minister for Health (the Hon. Mabel Howard), in the course of conversation with the Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst.) at the opening of the new wing of the Glenelg health camp on ? Saturday. Asked when she intended visiting the hospital, the Minister said that.there was never any occasion for such visits, since the institution was so excellently managed. She stated, however, that she would make an' effort -to visit the hospital next year.

Again there was a large attendance at the monthly social of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes held in the Hampstead Hall on Saturday night. Music was supplied by Bros. Les Chapman and S. Wilson, and extras by Messrs R. Chapman, Johnston and Scheib.. Novelty dances were won by Miss S. McKinnon and Mr Johnston, and Miss Hay and Mr R. Chapman. Winner of a competition was Miss McKinnon. Bros. Bushell and R. Thomson were masters of ceremonies.
