FALSE RETURNS OF INCOME
* DEFENDANT’S STORY NOT ACCEPTED (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 22. “It is beyond belief that defendant has, at the expense of bookmakers, made year after year the large sums represented by the increase in his assets, or even the more modest £7OO or £BOO a year which he himself estimates unless he has second sight for winners and the bookmakers have softening of the brain,” said Mr AY. H. Woodward, S.M., in the New Plymouth Court this morning, when giving his reserved decision on five charges of wilfully furnishing false returns of income laid against Michael Metod Novak. Novak was convicted on all five charges, and was fined £SO on each, with £9 12s costs. “The case for the prosecution rests on the admitted heavy accretions to defendant’s assets in each of the periods, totalling about £4700,” said the Magistrate. Referring to the bookmakers accounts, Mr Woodward said: “It is clear that if these arc genuine bookmakers’ accounts they are not a fair selection, but are a selection made to mislead the Court into believing defendant has made large profits.’
