Sound Financial Position The annual meeting of the Methvcn Collie Club was well attended. The balance-sheet showed a most satisfactory year’s efforts, and proved the club to be in a sound financial position. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr R. C. Todhunter; president, Mr L. The annual trials will be held on June 3, 4 and 5 on “Drayton Estate.’ Golf Club Meeting The annual, general meeting of the Methvcn Golf Club was held recently. Mr A. C. Gadd, in the absence of the president, presided over a fair attendance. ' . 1 , T The election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr G. Waddington - vice-president. Mr G. . Thomson; club captain. Mr L. A. Watson; vicecaptain, Mr W. K. Wilson,; secretary, Mr E. T. Kensington ; committee. Messrs R. Duff. S. M. Jackman, F. J. Tempero, H. V. Reid, R. Jenkins and F. W. Helps. The report and balance sheet lor the previous year’s activities were presented, and revealed that the club had had a reasonably good year. However, it was noted that costs bad increased to a large exetnt. In conse quence it was decided to increase subscriptions in order to meet the rising cost of labour and materials. It was decided to open tlie now playing season on April 3 if possible.

MOUNT SOMERS SCHOOL PRESENTATION OE PRIZES The annual presentation of prizes, of the Mt. Somers School, held 'recently, was largely attended by pupils, parents and friends.. Mr G. Vincent presided in the absence of the chairman of the committee, Mr G. W. Sandrey. Mr G. Edgar, member of the Canterbury Education Board, in presenting the prizes, complimented the ■ pupils, teachers, committee and parents upon the progress of the school Mr Edgar was accorded a vote of thanks for his visit. After the presentation of prizes Mr Vincent made a presentation of a fire fender and log box, on behalLof the committee, parents and friends to Mrs D. Hood, who was married recently. She had been infant teacher for the past 3£ years. Congratulations and best wishes were also extended to Mrs Hood by Miss G. Hewson, head teacher. Yvonne Alexander also made a presentation on behalf of the Brownies, and Adrian Lilley on behalf of the pupils. A bouquet was presented by Margrett Sandrey, and sprays were presented to Mrs Hoocl and Miss Hewson by Mrs G. Vincent. Social Evening A social evening was recently held in the library in honour of Mr and Mrs D. Hood, who were married recently. Mr/ L. Morgan, on behalf of those present, extended congratulations and best wishes, and presented them with a monetary gift.' Phyllis Gifkins presented Mrs Hood with a bouquet. Items were given by Mesdames Lindsay, Quantock, M. Collison and Collison senr., and Misses L. and D. Wightman. St. Aidan’s Sunday School The annual presentation of prizes of St. Aidan’s Sunday School was made after Evensong on Sunday by the Vicar, the Rev. W. C. Arnold. A presentation was also made to Mrs M. Collison for her valued services as Sunday school teacher for a number of years, who has now relinquished her duties. GIFT EVENING FUNCTION AT WINCHMORE " ' « In view of her approaching marriage Miss Shirley Prebble wa* the guest of honour at a gift evening held recently. Mr F. Nish (chairman) spoke of Miss Prebble’s good qualities and Mr J. Davidson, who also spoke, conveyed l the good wishes of the gathering and presented the guest of honour with a table laden with a variety of useful gifts. Miss Prebble -suitably replied. Mr Knox Cook supplied music for j dancing and Mr T. McKenzie played j an extra on the bagpipes. LAURISTON INSTITUTE SIXTEENTH ANNUAL MEETING The Kith annual meeting of the Lauriston Women’s Institute was well attended, the president, Mrs .1. A. Mackic, presiding. “Carry on with the good work” was the appropriate motto which was read bv Mrs O. E. Hooper. Mesdames H. T. Crothers and' J. Mounsey were appointed delegates to represent the Institute at the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation. Mrs Mackie was elected to represent Lauriston at, the Dominion conference to be held at Wellington in August. Mrs J. Pluck agreed to visit any local hospital patients on behalf ol the Institute. Competitions hold during the afternoon resulted : Bowl of asters, Miss .T. Hayward L Miss L. Letham 2, Mrs W. Goodwin 3; bloom, Mrs Mackie 1 and 2, Miss L. briefly reviewed the year’s work and thanked her officers and members for their fine support;

The annual report, prepared by the secretary. Mrs P. A. Goodwin, was read by Mrs T. E. Doak, on account of the secretary’s absence on holiday. The report was a full one, outlining a year of much activity and progress. The financial statement was presented by the treasurer, Mrs J. Pluck, who reported that the year had ended with a small credit balance.

On the motion of Mrs Mounsey,. the retiring officers were accorded a vote of appreciation. Prior to the election of officers, Mrs J. P. McQuilken (Hinds) occupied the chair. Mrs McQuilken addressed members on the alarming state of world affairs to-day and urged her hearers to do everything in then power to ensure world peace. Mrs Mackie thanked Mrs McQuilken lor her visit to Lauriston and for nor timely remarks. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs .T. A .Mackie; vicepresidents, Mesdames T. E. Doak and J. Mounsey, J. Pluck and L. Mills. Harvest Thanksgiving There was a large congregation at the annual harvest thanksgiving service of the Lauriston Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening. The Rev. J. N. Reid (Rakaia) was the preacher and Miss J. Skinner was the organist. The church was tastefully decorated with flowers, and a fine range of farm and garden produce. As a result of the service a valuable consignment of grain, flour, oatmeal and groceries was forwarded to the Presbyterian Orphanage at Christchurch. LAGMHOR FUNCTION BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY A meeting of those interested in the work of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held in the Lagmhor Presbyterian Church on Monday evening. The Rev. R. W. Brown presided, and introduced Miss N. G. Innes, the organising secretary of the Bible Society for the Cauterbury-Westland area Vocdl items, contributed by Miss- F. Findlay and Miss M. Ross, were greatly appreciated. Mrs J. D. Wright and Miss A. Ross played the accompam ments. A period of community hymn singing was indulged in. In a very interesting and educative address, Miss Innes- spoke on the world wide nature of the Bible Society, and the translation of the Scriptures into many languages. A vote of thanks was extended to Miss Innes and also to the soloists. Supper was then -served by the ladies and Miss Innes was given a fui - ther opportunity of meeting with those : present.
