BASKETBALL

9-A-SIDE KNOCKOUT TOURNEY 1947 REPRESENTATIVES BEAT 1937 Technical Old Girls were the winners of a senior A nine-a-side knockout tournament played under the auspices of the Ashburton Basketball Association on Saturday afternoon and High School was the successful team in the senior B grade. In the match between the 1937 and 1947 representatiye teams the younger players proved superior by 18 goals to 6. Junior competition matches were continued as usual.

The 1937 v. 1947 match proved a mixture of very good and mediocre basketball. Some of the 1937 team, perhaps outstandingly Mrs C. Hulme, reproduced flashes of old form, and at least two of the 1947 team fumbled and made feeble mistakes. The “Oldsters” won the toss and attacked at once, but good defence saved a score, and the “Youngsters’ notched the first goal within two .minutes of the start. E. Watson and M. Hill, who had scored the first goal, each added one, when O. Roolce netted for 1937 their first score, Catching defence out of place O. Rooke scored again and C. Hulme quickly followed, making the tally three-all. I M. Hill and E. Watson each added a goal and half-time came with 1947 five and 1937 three. On resumption- 1947 attacked and added one, and the game with varying fortunes swung from end to end till about half-way through the second spell the score stood at 10-5 in favour of this year’s team. From then on 1937 seemed to tire, and shooting became less accurate. The 1947 team missed a good many chances as well as their seniors, but the score slowly crept up till the whistle, when the tale read 1947, 18, 1937, 6. Mrs Porter was the referee. The score hardly reflects the run ot the game, as territorially the older players certainly held their own, and the principal cause of their defeat by so wide' a margin was an undeistandable lack of “finishing off” skill. Results were as follows; Senior A knock-out tournament— First Round: Technical Old Girls 11, High School Old Girls 6; St. Stephens 5 Convent 4; Methven a bye. Second Round: Technical Old Girls Methven 7. Final: Technical Old Girls 15, St. Stephen’s 5.
