WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

ASHBURTON DISTRICT MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute Mrs Fitzgerald (president) presided over a good attendance of members. After the singing of the ode and the reading of the aspirations by Mrs W. J. Marshall, a- motion of sympathy was extended to Mrs H. C. Page, who is in Warwick Hospital. # The correspondence included the agenda of the Federation half-yearly council meeting to be held at Mount Somers on October 8, also a notice ot an adult education week, with debates and prepared speeches. The secretary was instructed to forward an entry. Mrs E. A. Amos was thanked by the president for working the name “Ashburton” on the Institute banner. A group meeting is to be held m Tinwald Parish Hall on the third Wednesday in September, it was reported. Schedules for the annual show on September 26 were distributed. Mrs E. Loftus spoke further on the proposed trip to Queenstown, starting on October 29. The golden thread was continued by Mrs W. Sedcole, who read an extract from a speech given by Mrs Russell, A.C.W.W. delegate, who recently visited New Zealand. Invitations to Ashton-Waterton, on August 20, and Hampstead (Aug. 21) birthday parties were received. An enjoyable programme, arranged by the leaders of the losing houses, entertained members. Mrs J. Cullen sang two solos and Mrs Jordan gave musical monologues, while a written description of a luxury tour was read by Mrs Sinclair (Wakanui). Mrs Baker thanked these entertainers and the leaders of the houses for arranging the programme. Following afternoon tea, served by the hostesses, Mesdames Cairns, Livingstone, J. R. Leask and E. E. Walker, the singing of the National Anthem concluded an enjoyable afternoon. , Competitions resulted: Shortbread,. Mrs W. Joyce 1; jam tarts, Mrs J* Bland 1, Miss Bland 2, Mrs McKee 3; best bloom or truss, Mrs W. Joyce 1, Miss McDowell 2, Mrs Roffey 3; tapestry (wool), Mrs J. Bland 1, Mrs Corbitt 2, Miss McDowell 3.
