VALUE STRESSED
EXAMINATIONS IN SCHOOLS An interesting address on the value of examinations in schools was given by Mr D. Hepburn, of the South Canterbury branch of the Educational Institute, at the monthly meeting of the Mid-Canterbury branch last eveniug. The speaker said he was a Arm believer in examinations, regarding them as valuable to the children, the parents and the teachers. An interesting analysis of the diagnostic values of tests was given by Mr Hepburn, who advocated that examination papers should be sent home with reports. He criticised the educationists who worked from book theories. On the motion of Mr M. J. Leith a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. The president (Miss B. H. Brown), who presided over an attendance of about 30 members, welcomed visitors, Messrs Hepburn and H. G. Romans, of the South Canterbury branch, and Mr J. E. Frazer and Miss Sherratt, new members of the local branch. Reference was made to the loss to the Ashburton organisation in the transfer” on promotion of Dr. W. J. Boraman and Mr J. Southward. Both will be the recipients of letters of appreciaion of their services. Vacancies caused by the removal of Messrs Boraman, Southward and J. Small were Milled as follows: Vicepresidents, Miss D. Gibb and Mr Leith; executive members, Miss J. McGregor and Mr Frazer. The Education Board’s new regulations .were discussed and representations on various points agreed to. A report on the recent conference of the N.Z. Educational Institute was given by the local delegate, Mr S. W. Gower. Supper brought an interesting evening to a close.
