THREE IN WEEK

COMPLETION OF ASHBURTONHINDS DRAINS MORE DRAGLINES EXPECTED SOON By a coincidence, three drains in the Ashburton-Hinds drainage scheme are being completed within a period of about a week. Two have been finished this week and another is expected to be completed early next week. So far as Mr .J. S. Houston (divisional engineer of the South Canterbury Catchment Board) knows this is the first time that so many drains have been finished at almost the same time. The drains completed this week are Stormy Drain, in the Lowcliffe area, approximately 21 miles in length, and the northern drain, about four miles in length. It is hoped that Maginness’s Drain, on Ford’s road, near Tinwald, will be finished early next week. This drain is not quite six miles in length. At present five draglines are in operation on the scheme, while two further machines are expected to commence operations in about a month’s time.
