MAORI FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULT
INCIDENT AT RUGBY MATCH AT NUHAKA • (P.A.) , WAIROA, July 16. The climax to a recent incident at Nuhaka when ■ Senior-Sergeant McRae intervened in a Rugby match refusing to allow it to proceed until a player left the field was beard to-day before Messrs T. Sweetm.au and T. le C. Powdrell, Justices of the Peace, when Riki Smith, aged 34, a Maori, was charged with assaulting Douglas John Gordon during the NuhakaHurumui senior match at Nuhaka on June 28. Smith, who entered a plea of not guilty, was represented by Mr M. H. Tonkinson, and at the conclusion of the evidence was fined £2 10s and was ordered to pay £7 10s costs.
