METHODIST WOMEN’S AUXILIARY The monthly meeting of the Ashburton auxiliary of the New Zealand M.W.M.U. ‘was held yesterday at Baring Square. Mrs W. T. Blight presided and,, the Rev. Blight conducted the opening exercises. Further arrangements were made for the silver tree effort, and the celebration of the jubilee of the local auxiliary. , ~ Most interesting letters from the outgoing New Zealand executive were read by Mesdames Blight, Hawkey and Pethick. A letter of thanks and appreciation to the New Zealand president, Mrs Nicholson,' is to be sent, more especially in acknowledgment of the. excellent way she has kept branches in touch witb the Dominion-wide movement. At a function in Hamilton later this month Mrs Nicholson is to be succeeded by Mrs Virtue, who has many friends iq Ashburton. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames R. Agnew and S. G. Macfariarie.
APPEAL FOR EQUIPMENT FOR CHINA FIELD An appeal for clothing and hospital equipment for missionaries to take back to China with them, was made ;it the monthly meeting of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union yesterday, when Mrs J. S. Murray presided. Motions of sympathy were carried witli Miss N. Doak and Mrs E. Baker. Three missionary letters were read, one from Mrs Dell, at one time a resident of the New Hebrides, the Rev. J. G. Laughton, of Whakatane, and Miss V. Sutherland, of Kaliar, India. A letter was read from the P.A. president (Mrs L. C. Mcllroy). Mrs Murray read a short paper on illiteracy in India. Mrs C. F. Watts read a letter from Miss Jordan, staff secretary for New Zealand, appealing for more stamps, especially peace issues.
