TOWN PLANNING

SCHEMES FOR COUNTY CENTRES REPORT TO COUNCIL During their recent visit to Wellington, the chairman of the Ashburton County Council, Mr M. S. Turton, and the clerk, Mr G. Kelly, made inquiries into the progress of town planning schemes for several county centres.

Dealing with the matter at this morning’s meeting of the council, the chairman commented: “The important matter of town planning for the townships of Methven.and Rakaia was discussed with the town planning officials, and, although some ■progress is being made, shortage of technical staff is hindering its completion, as a number of large city plans arq under way. The officers were most courteous and helpful and assured us that progress would be made as early as possible. ■ “The opinion was expressed that the areas declared at Methven, Rakaia and Allenton were not sufficiently wide to provide full future protection, and it was agreed that suggestions as to extensions of the boundaries would be forwarded for the council’s consideration dftd attention.”
