SALVATION ARMY
NEW COMMANDER IN N.Z. (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 28. Commissioner Ranulph Astbury, who has been appointed Salvation Army territorial commander in New Zealand, is at present internationalsecretary of the Salvation Army, a post which he has held since 1943. Commissioner Astbury first received an officer’s appointment in 1904, and had been engaged in evangelical work in the East Finchley district for seven years before receiving successive administrative appointments in Bristol, Staffordshire and Eire. He was then placed in charge of men’s social work at London headquarters and jn 1927 was transferi’ed to the Army’s international headquarters, in . which he held various important administrative posts, including auditor-general, governor of men’s social work and international secretary. Commissioner Astbury travelled ex-, tensively in Europe, Canada and the United States, but has not previously visited New Zealand. He hopes to leave Britain with his wife and family in time to take up his new' post in October.
