CAUSE OF PEACE SETBACK
RESULT OF YUGOSLAV ULTIMATUM INTRUSION QF POWER POLITICS (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright.) NEW YORK, August 26. The newspaper “PM” in a leading article deploring the flare up between America and Yugoslavia says: “Let there be no misunderstanding of how American liberals feel about Yugoslavia’s immoral, indefensible, stupid action in shooting down our planes, but with all our national anger and pride let us not make the mistake of believing that our power will solve our world problems. America’s power, because of its bigness, is resented in many quarters.
“While we forced Yugoslavia to make amends, we have not convinced its leaders and people and have not won their friendship. The tragic fact is the affair has set back the cause of peace immeasurably. It has caused Russia to speak out in defence of its satellite, thus making Yugoslavia’s cause its own.
“Even more, it has stiffened our determination to resist the Russian viewpoint all down the line. The affair has given new emphasis to our approach to Middle East problems which we now view strictly from the standpoint of power politics instead of justice or common sense.”
Mr Herbert Hoover; President Truman’s special food investigator, declared that the United States should halt relief supplies to Yugoslavia until a free election as agreed on at Yalta can he held, supplies thereafter should be freely distributed without Communist control as at present.
The Washington correspondent of the “Herald Tribune” says a State Department's source revealed that the United States was not placing a complaint against Yugoslavia on the Security Council’s agenda owing to the marked improvement in diplomatic relations following behind the scenes and negotiations in Washington, Paris and Belgrade.
After representations from the Turkish Ambassador in Belgrade, Marshal Broz-Tito agreed to the immediate release of the Turkish captain Unesen, who was wounded when a passenger on the American aircraft shot down in Yugoslavia on Saturday last.
