HIGH COST OF PRODUCTION WASHINGTON, Aug. 22. The United States Maritime Commission’s post-war planning committee’s report on 1 lie outlook for American shipping says it normally costs ■3O io 100 per cent, morg to build ships in the United States than elsewhere. It also costs -50 per cent, more to operate shipping under American laws. There does nol seem any immediate prospect of overcoming these differences . The report added that the United States had. trained over 250,000 seamen in the last eight years. This training programme in reduced form should be continued. The report states that the “conference” system seems the. best means yet evolved for controlling rates and practices.
