AUGUST 25 1866 —Cook Strait cable completed. 1922 —First crossing of Cook Strait by aeroplane. Captain Euan Dickson flew from Sockburn to Wellington. 1941 — polish and Soviet, troops march into Iran. 1942 — Duke of Kent killed in air crash in Scotland. 1944 —Ashburton Patriotic Committee decided to close Welcome Club, opened in December, 1941.
